SHABBAT SERVICES -  Shabbat services are held each Friday evening at 8:00pm at our synagogue located on Highway 54 East of Fayetteville on the corner of Hwy 54 and Corinth road.  Friday night services are led by Susan Levine, our Cantorial Soloist.  The music at our services is an aid to achieving kavanah—a Hebrew word signifying the intent to draw closer to God through the proper spirit of awe, humility and reverence needed for prayer.  The Rabbi conducts services occasionally throughout the year.  All Shabbat services  are followed by an Oneg sponsored by a B'nai Israel member.

The Sabbath (or Shabbat, as it is called in Hebrew) is one of the best known and least understood of all Jewish observances. People who do not observe Shabbat think of it as a day filled with stifling restrictions, or as a day of prayer like the Christian Sabbath. But to those who observe Shabbat, it is a precious gift from G-d, a day of great joy eagerly awaited throughout the week, a time when we can set aside all of our weekday concerns and devote ourselves to higher pursuits. In Jewish literature, poetry and music, Shabbat is described as a bride or queen, as in the popular Shabbat hymn Lecha Dodi Likrat Kallah (come, my beloved, to meet the [Sabbath] bride). It is said "more than Israel has kept Shabbat, Shabbat has kept Israel."

Shabbat is the most important ritual observance in Judaism. It is the only ritual observance instituted in the Ten Commandments. It is also the most important special day, even more important than Yom Kippur. Shabbat is primarily a day of rest and spiritual enrichment. The word "Shabbat" comes from the root Shin-Bet-Tav, meaning to cease, to end, or to rest.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL -   Our religious school, under the guidance of director, Andrea Feinstein provides religious education for our children ages pre-school to Bar Mitzvah age.  Here, they learn the rich history of the Jewish people, a love for the religion,  the importance for keeping the traditions alive, and most important, a sense of pride for being Jewish.  We have a very progressive religious school, offering a complete class syllabus and general program of study beginning with Kindergarten and culminating with the 7th grade year.  Our preschool meets once per month with a program coordinated by the parents of the preschool children.  Each grade from K to 7 has textbooks and learning plans which instruct the students in a variety of topics, including Biblical study, historical concepts, life cycle events, Jewish customs, holidays, and festivals, and an in-depth study of Hebrew.  Children in K-4 also receive music/art instruction.  Our rabbi interacts and conducts services for the children on the weekends he is present.  At the onset of the 5th grade year, an additional Hebrew class is held once a week in the evening.  Students who are studying for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah during the 7th grade year have individual study and preparation in addition to religious school.   Religious school teachers are recruited from the many dedicated and knowledgeable members of our Congregation.

We hold a Consecration Service for our new Religious school members.  The school kids also participate in a Shabbat Service, and perform in various skits, plays, and singing during the annual Chanukah party.  At Passover, a walk-through Seder is held.

CHOIR - B'nai Israel has the extreme pleasure of having one of the finest choirs in a small congregation.    Kol Nidre services is one of the most moving experiences of the year thanks to the wonderful direction of our Cantorial Soloist and choir director, Susan Levine.  The choir participates in High Holy Day services and periodically performs throughout the year at special Friday night services.  Mrs. Levine also serves as the congregational cantor and tutors the Bar and Bat Mitzvah students to prepare them for their service.

Havdallahs - Family, social, and educational Havdallahs are held on a regular basis.
